2018 Purist Winter Drive – Great Cars, Greater Cause

Photos & Words: Justin P.

“Welcome” – Sometimes it’s a warm greeting, sometimes it’s a response to thankfulness. In either case, both were felt very strongly on the day of the annual Purist Winter Toy Drive in Southern California.

Sean Lee, automotive enthusiast and all-around great person, is the founder and fearless leader of Purist Group. Bonded by a passion for cars, all sorts of people come together for a cause greater than themselves – helping fill kids with smiles and joy this holiday season. With a toy donation as the only requirement, many come to show of their cars in support of all of Sean’s efforts. From imports to domestics, exotics to classics – you’ll find yourself surrounded by an epic mix of vehicles. This annual event continues to grow and grow, with this year arguably the biggest it’s ever been. The amazing support Sean is able to get is very heartfelt, with this year including the California Highway Police, Nitto Tire, Mazda, Reach Out World Wide, Michelin, Lamborghini Newport Beach and much, much more.

Here are a few highlights from the Purist Winter Drive:

Cody Walker of Reach Out World Wide hanging out at the Mazda Display.

Cody’s wife and daughter, Felicia and Remi, admiring the toys overflowing Drake Kemper’s Mazda MX-5 Miata Cup Car.

Justin Romulo ain’t playing no reindeer games.

We’re LIVE with Bisi Ezerioha of Bisimoto!

The super talented Deven Hitchens making quick work out of this iconic Ferrari.

Yogi’s Toyota Tacoma camping out at the Nitto Tire / Driving Line booth.

Michelin brought out some great cars, but the Blitz R348 GTR is what garnered a lot of attention.

Although the Koenigsegg Automotive AB Agera RS is just as awesome too!

Daniel K. Song (at Super Street) and Dominic Le (with Chasing J’s) with a couple Datsun 240zs bringing the Christmas joy.

It’s time to party because Adrian Ramirez’s widebody Ford Fiesta ST is here!

If Rudolph ever had to call in sick, Lamborghini Newport Beach is here for Santa!

Even more exotics!

Ashley’s DREAM – Hawaii 001

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world – Harriet Tubman

Car Owner: Ashley Tanabe

I first was introduced to Ashley during the summer of 2017, several of my friends had mentioned that she was a passionate automotive enthusiast that was from the island of Hawaii. At the time we first met, she was an owner of a “swaggy” Champagne Mode Parfume Lexus GS. The Lexus was equipped with air suspension topped off with Work Meister S1 3P wheels with all around Endless Big Brake.

Towards the end of 2017, Ashley was lucky enough to finally own a 1997 Porsche 911. We took a drive down to Pasadena, hoping and praying the Porsche wouldn’t die out!

In 1997 cars didn’t have the luxury of having an AUX or Bluetooth connectivity to listen to music. You either had to listen to the radio or use a cassette tape. This Porsche was equipped with a newer Porsche Design head unit which had a CD player. Positive: We had music blasting in the car. Negative:  The CD that was in the Porsche was all the hits from the early 70’s. One song in particular by The Five Stairsteps – Ooh Child was the song that was on repeat all night.

“Ooh-oo child, Things are gonna get easier, Ooh-oo child, Things’ll get brighter”

Ashley has been an automotive enthusiast for over 15 years. Throughout that time she defiantly had her fair share of builds varying from off-road vehicles, ricey (is that a word?) Honda’s, to VIP style cars.  However the one thing consistent between them has been that she’s always strived to be the “first” in some aspect; which is relatively easy coming from Hawaii since the trends tend to hit there last (or not at all).

In 2017 by a leap of faith, Ashley became connected with a Porsche modification/repair facility in Costa Mesa (Sleeper’s Speed Shop).  She had mentioned “The one reason why I have never ventured into the European market is due to the lack of parts availability & qualified technicians in Hawaii so with this newfound connection, I started to “browse” the market.”  She landed upon a random craigslist find in San Diego & ended up purchasing the 993 sight unseen with the help of AutoFashion & Sleepers.

The next step was a bit more difficult for Ashley, determining if she should stick to the Porsche Purist route which was equally tempting thanks to the influence of 911Cooled & their CoolFuchs Crew or “chop up a perfectly good car” and go RWB. For those who don’t know Ashley…she’s pretty indecisive

However sooner than later, the “need to be first” attitude got the best of her. She ending up going RWB due to the fact that it has not been done in Hawaii and the RWB female builder percentage is predominantly low (so I had to represent my fellow female automotive enthusiasts & prove that we can build an equally quality build).

“And that my friends, is how Hawaii RWB#1 was born in the Aloha State!”

Dave’s RWB “Diesel” New Jersey 001

Photos: Tom M.
Words: Denny H.

At a young age of 5, Dave eyeballed a red 964, asked his dad what type of car it was and the rest is now history. Dad’s solid advice given at the time set the foundation for what you see today, Dave’s 1989 3.2 Carrera Targa.

In 2009, Dave stumbled upon Nakai-san’s “Stella Artois”, it was “love at first sight”, Dave recites.

In 2010, the introduction of RWB USA with Mark Arcenal‘s “Pandora One” pushed Dave to set a goal. His goal was, within 10 years he will build one.

In August of 2018, we introduce you “Diesel”, sitting comfortable on 3-piece Fifteen52 Formula TR with Toyo R888R. Upgraded torsion bars with full poly bushings and Koni Sport Shocks; Elephant racing camber plates and a 3 point strut brace round out the corners.

The open air experience and curved rear glass attracted Dave to his 930. The lack of driving aides gave him a raw driving experience which was perfect for his street build.

The engine was massaged with 964 cams, 930 oil pump ,SSI heat exchangers, M&K Exhaust and custom tune all handled by ROCS Motorsports in Belleville, NJ.

The build is an emotional one. Dave’s special moment was witnessing the car community from all different platforms, coming together to experience his build – and lent a helping hand.

It’s unbelievable to see one man’s talent bringing the community together, and from what I hear, it’s impactful. That man is Nakai-san.

So, what was the advice Dave’s dad gave him at 5 years old? “If I studied and worked hard, I can afford one in the future.”

I would concluded that it was a solid advice.

Dave gives special thanks to: Fifteen52 for the amazing wheels, ROCS Motorsports for the motor build, Pino from @rsr_autobody_restoration for the amazing paint job, @autocouture for hosting, and everyone that came out to support the build.

Now, I present you the amazing photoset of Diesel by Tom Murray (@supreme_tom)

XS CarNIght 2017 – Long Beach, Shoreline Aquatic Park

Setting the groundwork for spring events was XS CarNight. XSCN comes in hot for its 3rd year in a row and each year gets better and better. Hidden away behind the Aquarium of the Pacific and adjacent to Pier Point Landing, a spot for deep sea charters. XSCN has a stunning view of Shoreline Village and the Queen Mary while accompanied by the Rainbow Lighthouse above.

I arrived shortly after 6 o’clock after fighting traffic with prom going down at the Aquarium of the Pacific. I met up with Brian from Infinite Auto Design as he escorted me in. The sun was about the drop and just about every photographer was out trying to capture the perfect shot at that perfect time.

The main stage was surrounded by a entourage of RWB’s, including our friend Jon Sibal’s 964 on Work Meisters.

I caught a few shots like the drop-top e30 with a Pandem kit executed by CA Tuned.

Busted Knuckle Garage had a very clean set up with air-cooled dubs.

Arthur’s StanceNation x Aimgain FR-S

As the sun dropped, shadows were in almost every shot. I waited a few moments and then pulled out my night weapon of choice and continued with the event shots.

Ron’s Amuse S2k was one of the first with bright red Volk Racing wheels

Ducati 1299 Panicle S

Liberty Walk R8

All Road Outfitters Audi Quattro

EuroKlasse’s F80 M3

Thanh’s Vlene FR-S in the darkness by AutoTuned.

By the time i reached Thanh’s FR-S, it was practically pitch black. The only lights were along the path, and the interior portions of the peninsula was in complete darkness. Vehicles began to leave and left a open playground to capture the remaining.

Violent Clique was in full effect.

Chris’s MK5 on Work Seekers SX

Fausto’s S2k on chrome and gold 3-piece WORK Meisters

George’s e36 with Weds Kranze Cerberus

Taking it back to the old school classic euros was…

3 Point Social Club with a set of classic Benz’s such as Jimmy’s 280e

As participates cleared I had more walking space. I stopped by Infinite Auto Design and captured their wide body S2K and EVO

I also captured Chris’s beautiful NSX on chrome SSR SP1

The Acid Green RWB on HRE’s which was about the only RWB left of the grass

TunerCults Liberty Walk R35

AccuAir’s R8

Old School Maxima Wagon

V6 EcoBoost F100 by WagnerTuning

I couldn’t say bye without shooting Brandon’s e30 with a Pandem kit.

In the end, it was the first time I have ever shot an event with my night weapon. It was down and dirty, but what other way to capture so many car’s in the short time I had to capture one of the best events to hit the shores!

Check below for more shots.

sema-2016-6064If you are an automotive enthusiast, then you know the mecca of car events, SEMA. We’ve covered it through the years and since the recession, it has gotten bigger and bigger every year. This year SEMA celebrates it’s 50th year and without a doubt, it’s also a reunion of current and past partners. It’s a week where you can gorge on 50 dollar buffet dinners and not feel too guilty because you’re walking an average of 10 miles a day. With over 3000 vehicles, it’s easy to miss a good amount. therefore. you walk though the halls and snap whatever catches your attention.

For example, the field-savaged, body-dropped, rotary-powered, 510 built by Twisted Images, sitting low on AirLift suspension and classic BBS wheels.sema-2016-6236

Wekfest LA 2014 – Coverage

The next big stop on the Tjin Edition X DaYUUM RoadShow was none other than the sunny, sea-breezy setting of Long Beach, CA. In the home of the Queen (Queen Mary, that is), Wekfest LA had all the elites on display.

wekfestla-2014-just-02
As hectic as is it was to roll-in and setup in the early morning with an unanticipated bike marathon going on just on the outskirts of the show grounds. It was even crazier once the show finally got started and the floodgate of spectators were opened. Before I start this recap I just want to say how thankful and proud I am of the whole team for stepping up and working hard helping out all the people who stopped by our booth.

wekfestla-2014-just-01 wekfestla-2014-just-04 wekfestla-2014-just-05 wekfestla-2014-just-06 wekfestla-2014-just-07 wekfestla-2014-byron-01 wekfestla-2014-byron-02WKFTLA-1WKFTLA-2WKFTLA-4WKFTLA-7WKFTLA-9WKFTLA-11WKFTLA-14Yup, it takes a lot of effort to make this look this good.

wekfestla-2014-just-08
Oh those bags. Those motherf’n goodie bags…Don’t get me wrong we LOVE our partners and LOVE our guests. But DaYUUM! We put about 400 of these suckers together throughout the entire show!

wekfestla-2014-byron-03
We had a line for days and our asses never quit!

We also got some extra help too. I got a few shots in before the show officially started, but the rest of the show I was ringside. Luckily, Byron Yoshida was with us to lend his expertise to photograph the awesome cars and the lovely ladies. (I’m sure you’ll be able to easily tell which lame photos are mine and which epic ones are his haha).

Just as everyone who entered the venue decided, why don’t we start by checking out what’s going on at our booth?

wekfestla-2014-just-11wekfestla-2014-byron-04
Well if you take a LibertyWalk to your right, you will see a resting Godzilla.

wekfestla-2014-just-12
Be careful as to not get too close. It may bite.

wekfestla-2014-just-09
Next to it was our other beast. Our trailer hauler.

wekfestla-2014-just-10
Our gun slingin’ six-shooter. Pew pew!

wekfestla-2014-byron-05
At the other end, the yes a rocket bunny green Vortech supercharged machine

RAUH-roh! I think we’re missing one…
wekfestla-2014-byron-06 wekfestla-2014-byron-07 wekfestla-2014-byron-08
Of course! This RAUH-Welt Begriff beauty by iForged just chillin’ in a cool Adriatic Blue by our trailer.

No question, we had a lot of love at our booth.

wekfestla-2014-just-13
And if you didn’t feel it, Denny definitely made sure you did (men only!).

There was more WekFun going on else where, so let me take you through all the sights and sounds (we’ll probably just the sights) of the day.

wekfestla-2014-byron-09
Couldn’t help but stare at the Speed Hunters FR-S all day, (maybe because they were directly in front of our booth).

wekfestla-2014-just-14
From demo car to full on show car, Beat-Sonic is doing big things now!

wekfestla-2014-byron-10
Funny, I’ve seen the Evasive s2k a lot thanks to having friends who are Hot Wheels nuts, but I believe this might be the first time I really looked at the actual car live in person.

wekfestla-2014-byron-11
“I like LibertyWalks on the beach, piston coladas, and getting a new drivetrain.” Or some variation of that is probably on most dating profiles of the people here at Wekfest.

wekfestla-2014-just-15
Every time the Queen Mary would blow her own, we thought it was just Brian clowning around in his Benz again lol

wekfestla-2014-just-16
Pure classic. I remember the days of dial-up modems, logging on to AOL, and doing a Yahoo! Images search on all da bomb tuner cars. The Teggy was by far the must have fix-up car then. The memories.

wekfestla-2014-just-18
[Insert caption here]. Sorry, just in so much awe I can’t think up of a proper caption. All I know is that Mikey‘s Teggy never didn’t have a crowd taking pictures of it all over and inside that cleanly rebuild engine bay.

wekfestla-2014-just-17
Take a step back and you can appreciate Canibeat’s triple threat

wekfestla-2014-byron-12
Probably one of my absolute favorite photos I’ve seen coming from Wekfest. Noel‘s super photogenic #notrocketbunny, not aimgain, not ml24, not chargespeed, not tommy kaira, not varis…wait I mean yes Varis widebody uhhh…what car is this again?

wekfestla-2014-byron-13
Another hidden gem was this timeless VW Bug just hanging out in its natural habitat.

wekfestla-2014-byron-14
AirREX GTR basking in the sunlight

wekfestla-2014-just-19 wekfestla-2014-just-20
As clean as a baby’s booty

wekfestla-2014-just-21
The euros were in full force, strutin’ their widebodies all over the place.

wekfestla-2014-byron-15 wekfestla-2014-byron-16
Wekfest was about quality not quantity. And it really helped space the event, giving ample room to shoot beauties like James‘ Porsche.

And now the Pièce de résistance, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Time to bring out the ladies!

The it’s jdm yo! booth almost always has one of the highest seksi indexes at any show. Oh yea and they have a model’s lounge too, which I think helps a little.

wekfestla-2014-byron-17
The smile that never fails, the gorgeous Sally Mia Kior

wekfestla-2014-byron-18
While Jae wasn’t with us at Wekfest this year, he’s really been obsessed with the whole floral print thing lately. You think Noemii J would let him borrow her top for our next show at Nurotag LA?

wekfestla-2014-byron-19
The first rule of meeting Xena Kai is to not geek out. Don’t geek out, you better not geek out…ahhh!! IT’S XENA KAI!!

wekfestla-2014-byron-20
You’ve seen the Duck Face, the Rawr Face, the Super Kawaii Peace Sign, the Thuglife…
wekfestla-2014-byron-21
well now, we introduce Amy Fay and the all new, Extreme Vogue!

Now that we got you laughing…

wekfestla-2014-byron-22
How about a photoset of the super cute and always amusing Jessica Xioa? 🙂

wekfestla-2014-byron-23 wekfestla-2014-byron-24 wekfestla-2014-byron-25
She’s got them legs fo Xioa!

wekfestla-2014-byron-26 wekfestla-2014-byron-27
Jessica was showing us that seksi model shots don’t always have to be seductive and posed, they can be random and fun too!

wekfestla-2014-byron-28
We promise you, Jessica does NOT have super strength. She is not leaning on the car and pushing it out-of-place. No, no, no…the wheels were like that when we got there. I swear.

And last but not least, our own Hot DaYUUM Hunnies

And there’s a lot more about that the that the that that gurrll here.

What a show, what a show. Always something going on. No one wanted to leave. People were here as early as the crack of dawn and there were still a lot of spectators hanging around after the show while they were still handing out all the awards. No one wanted to leave.

wekfestla-2014-byron-39
So I think I’ve written more than enough. If you’ve hung on this long I either did a great job keeping you entertained or you were desperately waiting for Byron’s awesome model shots at the end and hoping there’s more. Well there isn’t so either go back to the top and read it all again, or check out the other articles we have on our site, or whatever else you want to do. You just can’t stay here cause the show’s over, nothing more to see, unless you want to stalk my Instagram -> @justdayuum <-

Duces!
