Relaxin’ in So Cal 2016

RASC-4904

RASC-4906Relaxin’ in So Cal is an event organized by a long time truck club called, Relaxed Atmosphere. Started in the early 90’s, they have tested and outlived current trends, especially with the Sport Compact car movement. But, the die-hards stayed true to their roots and kept on truckin’. This year, RISC was held at the Home Depot Center, occupying a large portion of the parking lot lied so many fresh trucks. See for yourself what we are talking about.

Flashback Friday: July 4th Weekend Trail Run

I had a chance to go behind the wheel of a Trail Teams edition FJ cruiser for the first time in 2013. Around August of the following year, I was given the keys to a TRDPro 4Runner to drive around town and dirt roads. After handing back the keys of the TRDPro, I knew that it was a trap – Now I’m hooked and suckered in by these Toyota off road warriors.  It was clear to me that I will have my own truck or SUV one way or the other. It may not be a brand new one straight out of a Toyota show room floor but I had made up my mind that it would be a Land Cruiser. I always had my eye on FJ80 or 80 series cruisers or 1990 – 1997 Land Cruiser. Even with time they still look good and very capable of kicking dirt from weekend road trip. During my initial search I did not find a truck that had an acceptable mileage and within my budget. Also, gas prices were still on the high $4 range that I could not pull the trigger on one.

FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Edition – Behind the Wheel

Beginning of 2015, gas prices was gradually going down so I re-started my search and now I’m equipped with an option after doing some research on the Land Cruisers. The 80 series is a great vehicle that comes with factory front and rear lockers -they are just about unstoppable off road. As an option I had the 100 series on the back of my head. For what I have read and learned, it brings power, comfort and more room while still capable of doing off road or exploration duties. Let’s just say that I found the one after searching for months.  I ended up with a 100 series in a Lexus badge, the LX470.  The most significant change from the Toyota counter part was its front fascia.  It is also equipped with an Active Height Control (AHC) and automated folding side mirrors; other than these features the interior, engine and transmission all are 100 series components.

After owning the LX for a little over a year, the itch to make changes started – well the itch to make modification after a few months of owning it was already there but I held myself from doing so to enjoy the ride and comfort that it brings. It just rides like a huge comfortable sedan or limo. I was so hesitant to make changes specially to the suspension but if I was to take it out on rough roads I need to put a little more ground clearance to the truck.  Also, it does look like a soccer mom’s SUV with the stock trim all intact.

IMG_3045

Browsing through my Instagram feed, I found RPM Auto Center (@rpm626) owned by Mr. Steve Lam. I found out that it was a local shop located in Irwindale, CA that works on various cars and trucks. After being an Instagram-stalker for a while, I learned that the owner also had an LX470 that he had been working on and had been taking it out on the trails. A few DMs and email here and there, I found myself one day at the shop dropping off my LX. Looking around while at the shop, I noticed that a lot of customers were a good mix of young and older generation – taking their vehicles for a simple oil change or doing some upgrades on a rig. The customers seemed really satisfied with the service provided. In the back of my head, I felt that I took my truck to the right place. After running the Lexus AHC suspension for a little over a year, it was time to upgrade the stock suspension. Steve recommended the ARB / OME suspension kit that will provide the truck a 2.5″ lift, a Slee Offroad front Diff Drop and SCS wheels with BFGoodrich All Terrain KO2 tires. He runs the same suspension set up in his own rig and had been satisfied with how it handles on regular streets and trails.

IMG_3042

Steve had organized a July 4th trail run and invited a few recent and old customers to join in. I knew that this will be a good test for the LX after its few upgrades. It will be a good learning session for newbies like me since I’ve only taken a truck on dirt roads. Tagging along in the trail run was the only female driver in the group, Ms. Eliza Alonzo in her 2013 Trail Teams Edition FJ Cruiser. July 3rd came and we met up with the people joining in on the run at Yi Mei in Monrovia, CA. I was anticipating a small group but ended up with at least 15 to 18 trucks lined up in front of the restaurant early in the morning.  It was decided that with the big group that we had, it would be best to go to Silverwood Lake, CA or Cleghorn trail to easily guide and control the drivers that joined.  Part of the group and acted as one of the mentors on this trail run was Mr. Steve Chow who owns a 100 series. He has mentored and organized a number of trail runs even during his Nissan Xterra days but now owns and drives a hundy for a good I believe 10 years now. He still manages to keep it running strong after all these years.

With a few stops along the way to pick up more people joining in, it had at least 18 trucks. At the beginning of the trail, we were asked to prep our trucks and deflate our tires to about 25 psi to get more traction and control going over some rough terrain.  A driver’s meeting was also held to share pointers,  do’s and don’t on the trail.  The group was also divided into 4 groups so that one experienced driver will be with the trail newbies as an adviser / spotter or guide during the run.

IMG_3048

As much as I enjoyed the bump and grind of the trail, I definitely enjoyed meeting new folks as well as seeing some greenery from a higher elevation. Half way through the drive, not only did the elderly statesmen enjoyed the ride but even the young ones were enjoying the sun.

IMG_3078 IMG_3076 IMG_3074 IMG_3073 IMG_3058

Don’t be surprised, even a brand new LX570 was in it for the fun. It caught a few bushes and dips along the way but it was more than capable going through the trails. The bruises and scratches will buff off.

IMG_3068 IMG_3070

I was surprised with Ms. E. Alonzo on the trail. Driving alone and at times just following the lines of our mentors – the two Steves, she was able to pick up right away at times  doing better than me on her FJ. I think on the back of her head she’s thinking, “I can do what these fools are doing…”

IMG_3049 IMG_3058 IMG_3056 IMG_3061 IMG_3050

On the side note… the pinstripes are definitely real.

IMG_3097 IMG_3098 IMG_3094 IMG_3086 IMG_3088 IMG_3082

IMG_3092 IMG_3090 IMG_3095 IMG_3089

At the end of the day, it was a great learning experience for me and everyone else that joined the run. I learned new driving techniques off road and even with its age, the LX held up pretty well. It was my first organized trail run and it did not disappoint. I would like to thank Mr. S. Lam of RPM Auto Center for organizing this event as well as the elderly and  experienced drivers that help guide us newbies at the event. Hope to join in on the next trail event.

Until the next one… Peace!

Formula D 2016 – Round 1 Streets of Long Beach

Words and Photos by Gilbert

Another year kicks off with the Formula D 2016 season at the Streets of Long Beach. Things were a bit different this year as due to rainy conditions, the qualifiers from the first day were cancelled and instead drivers were given practice time for the day instead. Following that into the second day competition, they went with a seeded order based on 2015 rankings to start the competitions.

Another thing that was different was the car show usually held by Illest and titled Offset Kings has been replaced by a Toyota sponsored auto gallery.

Asian American Expo & Anime Impulse 2016

Words and Photos by Gilbert

Kicking off the new year with some new coverage of a local event, formerly known as the Chinese American Expo, the Asian American Expo is hosted at the beginning of each year to celebrate the coming of the Lunar New Year Festival, with the goal recreating the New Year celebrations found across Asia at this time of the year. Food, shopping, entertainment and fun – these are all annual staples that can be found at each year’s event. In conjunction with this event the creators of the KTOWN Night Market and the OC Block Party, they introduced the first Anime Impulse event that happened side by side with the Asian American Expo. The Anime Convention-like setup was a really relaxed event with what appeared to have vendors and artist alley sharing the same space and people could buy various merchandise, prints of popular cosplayers, sit and enjoy some panels or presentations and just generally check out the sights aside from all the food from the other areas of the expo.

Anime Impulse also brought out a fun line-up of Itasha cars. These are popular sight in japan as fans display their devotion to their fandom in the form of their vehicles.

SEMA Show 2015: Scottie’s Pick

Silhouette of a Sunny, Soul of a Hakosuka

History. Pride. Preservation and Vintage Motorsports are 3 things that make up a company called Chasing J’s.

Owned and operated by Dominic Le, Chasing J’s is a company specializing in restomods and classics. SEMA 2015, provided me with a prime example of how Dominic’s passion for Vintage Motorsports evolved over his company and himself. He created something very special that caught my eye at SEMA. Enjoy!

  • Owner: Dominic Le
  • Truck: 1974 Datsun Sunny UTE

Dominic has me drooling all over his ‘Hakotora’

Picture 10 Edit

One of my favorite parts of the car is in the back, a carbon fiber bed liner that was trimmed to fit perfectly to compliment simplicity with its brushed aluminum trimming…

Picture 6 Edit

Clearly you can tell that 09 Racing did a fantastic job with this front end Hakosuka (C10 Skyline)…you can’t even tell its a Sunny!

Picture 11 Edit

If you ever get the chance to see this vehicle in person with your very eyes, you will see the real craftsmanship that went into this build. The amount of detail is stunning. I am absolutely in love with this…Awesome job guys!

This concludes my pick for this year SEMA 2015! Hope you enjoyed the ride…because I did!

Till next time…Peace!

SEMA Show 2015: Denny’s Picks

SEMA, a visual orgasm for auto enthusiasts, a designer’s showcase, a builder’s dream, a company’s showroom, and one of Las Vegas’s largest convention.

4000 plus cars and hundreds of vendors fill almost every square inch of the convention halls and surrounding parking lots. It’s difficult to see all the action during the four day event, but it didn’t keep the Crew from picking out a few fresh rides that caught our attention. I love import cars, but I am also very much in love with older domestic muscle. The craftsmanship invested into cars 40 to 50 years old or older, have a huge place in my heart.

As I cruise miles of the show floor, I set out to find some of my favorite builder’s work, such as the Ringbrothers. Their attention to details always has me in Awww. This 1965 Mustang Fastback shows off Ringbrothers production pieces which are available for purchase. The details into this Mustang are worth taking a closer look at.SEMA 2015-9605

Another awesome ride is Andy Williamson’s 56 Chevrolet Bel Air. To the naked eye, it has a patina exterior, Vortech Supercharged LS3 engine, sharp engine bay, and sick interior. What can not be seen, can be touched. Grazing your fingers over the finish, one will notice that it’s been completely coated with matte clear, preserving its age in all its glory. Spocom San Jose – 2015

It was one of those days where California had 2 shows going on a weekend and I had to choose between Auto enthusiast presented by Nitto in Anaheim, and Spocom Show in San Jose. I thought, since we’re having the Tjin Edition x DaYUUM RoadShow down in Anaheim, why not drive up north and have a little road trip to cover Spocom up in the bay. So Friday night, I rode with Mikey (@photo_md) along with some of the R-Rydes crew, Danh (@dvo414), and Alf (@bluewaffleg35) to cruise up north but had to re-route and take freeway 101 since we got an update from Tricia that there was a brush fire going on at Highway 152, the usual way to San Jose from SoCal. We got there around early a.m. safe and sound and met up with the rest of the R-Rydes crew to roll in at the show. It was a pretty chill show, nothing big compare to the Spocom Anaheim that happened a few weeks ago. It’s more of a good vibes, and seeing some of the NorCal friends that I’ve never seen for a while. It was definitely a good time chillin and chatting up with the bay area peeps. With that being said, here’s a few of the cool rides and beautiful women of Spocom San Jose.

Jovi’s Lancer Evo, one of the few cars that gets to show inside Club Auto sports showroom.

Our staff was hella tired after with the hella amount of goodie bags we put together. They were just hella flying out the booth with the hella amount of people stopping by. It even got so crazy that Neil Tjin went to the hella top of the trailer to throw out hella more freebies. Let’s just say that the people hella loved it!

Wekfest blessed us with another great event at the Queen Mary Event Center. The venue was filled with more than 500 cars and housed several thousand spectators. Wekfest LA, actually in Long Beach, was the third showing for the Tjin Edition x DaYUUM RoadShow, where we were placed in the infamous “tear drop.” It gave us a beautiful view and a cool breeze. Much cooler than on the black asphalt. Throughout the day, we had a steady stream of enthusiasts in line for our Meguiar’s goody bags. Wekfest LA, was also the first time the Tjin Edition Honda FIT was displayed in the US, other than the SEMA Show, where it debuted. We had special guests, Meguiar’s and Hubert from Phase2 with his stunning MKIV joining us as well.

AutoCon LA 2015

AutoCon has arrived this year again, and there is no shortage of sweet looking cars and plenty of models to go around. In the recent years, Justin Fong has started doing a drive-up stage to showcase some of the impressive cars in the industry today. As well as do some interviews and a close look at some of the finer details that some of these cars have to offer. It has become a staple for his event and it is definitely a crowd pleaser for the audience.

AutoCon2015-14

I just want to take a serious note right now, that as an attendee, please respect the cars and do go around touching, reaching into the cabin, or generally just feeling the paint or putting fingerprints on the car. The owners of the car work hard on them and it is a shame to see ignorant people just do whatever they feel like at the shows. Example here:

AutoCon2015-34

I witnessed these 2 kids for a good 10 minutes reaching into this 240z and touching various points of the car and at one point, i think they pressed a panel too hard and left a dent.

Moving onto more pleasant events, yes, there were plenty of models on hand, with the various vendors bringing some of the top models in the industry to AutoCon’s own model lounge situated across from the stage.

Formula D 2015 – Round 1 Streets of Long Beach

With Round 2 coming up this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, I wanted to get my brief coverage of the event up. Taking place the weekend before the Long Beach Grand Prix, the Formula D scene is a great way to get fans amped up for the new season of car events and new vendors, new drivers, new cars, new umbrella girls and just generally a taste of things to come this season.

Fredrick Aasbo for Rockstar Energy drink snagged the win at the first round and the competition did get pretty fierce on the track.
