Kuya Model Expo – Cosplay Edition

Words and Photos by Gilbert

This past weekend, southern california was getting into the halloween spirit with a local show hosted by none other than Big Abe himself. Abe and his staff has been an icon in the car show and model industry that it was great that he put together this event to gather some of the hottest models in the scene today. I had the pleasure of doing a quick recap of his event which features girls coming in from washington, the east coast, even as far as Australia.

Formula D 2016 – Round 1 Streets of Long Beach

Words and Photos by Gilbert

Another year kicks off with the Formula D 2016 season at the Streets of Long Beach. Things were a bit different this year as due to rainy conditions, the qualifiers from the first day were cancelled and instead drivers were given practice time for the day instead. Following that into the second day competition, they went with a seeded order based on 2015 rankings to start the competitions.

Another thing that was different was the car show usually held by Illest and titled Offset Kings has been replaced by a Toyota sponsored auto gallery.

Asian American Expo & Anime Impulse 2016

Words and Photos by Gilbert

Kicking off the new year with some new coverage of a local event, formerly known as the Chinese American Expo, the Asian American Expo is hosted at the beginning of each year to celebrate the coming of the Lunar New Year Festival, with the goal recreating the New Year celebrations found across Asia at this time of the year. Food, shopping, entertainment and fun – these are all annual staples that can be found at each year’s event. In conjunction with this event the creators of the KTOWN Night Market and the OC Block Party, they introduced the first Anime Impulse event that happened side by side with the Asian American Expo. The Anime Convention-like setup was a really relaxed event with what appeared to have vendors and artist alley sharing the same space and people could buy various merchandise, prints of popular cosplayers, sit and enjoy some panels or presentations and just generally check out the sights aside from all the food from the other areas of the expo.

Anime Impulse also brought out a fun line-up of Itasha cars. These are popular sight in japan as fans display their devotion to their fandom in the form of their vehicles.

AutoCon LA 2015

AutoCon has arrived this year again, and there is no shortage of sweet looking cars and plenty of models to go around. In the recent years, Justin Fong has started doing a drive-up stage to showcase some of the impressive cars in the industry today. As well as do some interviews and a close look at some of the finer details that some of these cars have to offer. It has become a staple for his event and it is definitely a crowd pleaser for the audience.

AutoCon2015-14

I just want to take a serious note right now, that as an attendee, please respect the cars and do go around touching, reaching into the cabin, or generally just feeling the paint or putting fingerprints on the car. The owners of the car work hard on them and it is a shame to see ignorant people just do whatever they feel like at the shows. Example here:

AutoCon2015-34

I witnessed these 2 kids for a good 10 minutes reaching into this 240z and touching various points of the car and at one point, i think they pressed a panel too hard and left a dent.

Moving onto more pleasant events, yes, there were plenty of models on hand, with the various vendors bringing some of the top models in the industry to AutoCon’s own model lounge situated across from the stage.

Formula D 2015 – Round 1 Streets of Long Beach

With Round 2 coming up this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, I wanted to get my brief coverage of the event up. Taking place the weekend before the Long Beach Grand Prix, the Formula D scene is a great way to get fans amped up for the new season of car events and new vendors, new drivers, new cars, new umbrella girls and just generally a taste of things to come this season.

Fredrick Aasbo for Rockstar Energy drink snagged the win at the first round and the competition did get pretty fierce on the track.

Vapes & Babes — Hosted by Kuya Model Expo

IMG_0848

One of the first shows of the season was an event in the vaping community. Big Abe’s Kuya Model Expo hosted its very first Vape & Babes event and there were plenty of hunnies to go around the event. There were also some big names in the vaping community attending as well as setting up in the vendor areas such as Ruthless E-Juice, Influx, Eliqcube among others.

Originally the event was to be held in Bellflower, but last minute they had to change to the venue in carson so hopefully everybody made it out in time to see all the things.

In the Dayuum! Booth, we had Dayuum Hunnies Jannie Phan and Charlene meeting and greeting fans.

Kuya Model Expo: Holiday Edition 2014

Words by Gilbert for DaYUUM.com

IMG_2172

Big Abe has been a figure in the import industry for quite a while now and when he puts together a show, he really puts together a show. The Kuya Model Expo/R1 Concepts: Holiday Edition is the 3rd expo that he’s put together inviting many of the lovely ladies in the import modeling scene to gather and just generally have a meet & greet as well as photo op for their fans in a centralized environment. There was also a Car Show happening, some Vape related vendors coming out to showcase their latest products, even a bit of street food action with Belly Bombz Truck and Yeti Tacos on the scene feeding hungry fans and models.

Hello Kitty Con 2014

DSCF7427

Hello Kitty has officially turned 40 years old this year and to celebrate, LA introduced the first Hello Kitty Con which took place in the Little Tokyo Area. There was lots of Hello Kitty related festivities to be experienced and I’ll walk you guys through a few of the things I did for the one day I went. There was a Media Preview night but I had forgotten to apply for media for the event so I wasn’t able to check out everything the night before but to start the experience you had to go pick up your color-coded badge for the different days as seen above.

Everything was conveniently located at the Japanese American History Museum in Los Angeles so that made things a bit easier to navigate around to look for things.

DSCF7366 DSCF7369 DSCF7373

People lined up early to be the first ones into the  convention, and even there was a person who camped out the night before at like 2 AM to be the very first. She received a gift basket from the convention organizers which I’m not familiar of the contents within.

Once the floodgates opened, I made a beeline for the Friendship Station Pop-up Shop to pick up the 40th anniversary exclusives and there was plenty of Hello Kitty items for sale as well as things on display.

DSCF7396 DSCF7398 DSCF7404

The convention featured a lot of art decor to pose and photograph, a concert stage, a tattoo parlor giving FREE hello kitty tattoos, a vintage mini product museum, a live DJ spinning music and various classes and shoppes to feed your addiction for Hello Kitty.

DSCF7405 DSCF7410 DSCF7460 DSCF7462 DSCF7464

One of the featured things to do at the convention was actually the Hello Kitty Hungry Hunt, which was a 4-5 week long scavenger hunt of restaurants in various parts of LA, West Hollywood and Sawtelle districts of Los Angeles that had featured menu items that included a limited edition Hello Kitty Pin (1000 pcs of each made).

The Hello Kitty Food truck sold Hello Kitty themed Macarons, Donuts, Mini-Cakes even Hello Kitty Themed water bottles.

And I’ll wrap this up with some of the Hello Kitty Fashion displays they had. All in all, if you’re a real fan, you’d love the experience here. Especially if you’re a collector of the rare hello kitty merchandise. I had actually picked up some stuff which I plan to shoot some Dayuum Hunnies with so be on the lookout for that.

Sandra Wong – Up Close and Personal

Sandra Wong has been the sweet girl-next-door that has made a lasting impression in the import community. From gracing the covers of Super Street Magazine to being crowned Miss MFest, there is no limits to the seemingly endless accolaids that she has received.

For the the longest time, I’ve been wanting to put together a photoshoot for the lovely Sandra Wong and thanks to DaYUUM, I have an opportunity to feature her with my photography. Also, check out our brief interview with Miss Wong to find out more about her!

Sandra Wong’s Bambu Meet and Greet

Last friday, Sandra Wong in collaboration with Bambu Desserts and Tea in Irvine, CA did a model meet and greet event in which she also invited a few of her modeling friends such as Christy Troung, Serena Su, Airica Moe and Taya Cay.

Fans had a chance to meet the lovely ladies in a fun boba shop setting as well as purchase some of their merchandise, take pictures and just spread good cheer all around.
